Nature Journal

An activity for all ages!

http://www.squidoo.com/naturejournal

Here is a wonderful page filled full of pictures of nature journals and a few ideas of the supplies that you will need to take with you on the way.  You can go out and purchase these items but it is really easy to make your own at home.  And a lot less expensive.

As I mentioned before, each child will need to decide on how they want to illustrate their journal.  They may want to draw, color, make tracings, photographs, etc.  Each person is recommended to write about what they see. The color, shape, size. etc.

For example, when we study about seeds, we will describe the monocot vs dicot seeds and how to tell the difference.  Some of the kids will decided to draw them. Others will use a suggested activity to photograph the differences between the two.  While others may wish to glue an actual dicot or monocot seed to the page.  all of these are correct ways and makes this journal unique!

Here is a sample of the differences:

An experiment may consist of placing a monocot (corn seed) and a Dicot (bean seed) in a bag with wet black paper in it.  Then watching the growth of the two of the first few days.  We may even dissect the seeds to see the differences.

This applies to all areas of science. You will find discussion about it in Biology, Botany, etc.

Have fun making your Nature Journals. I can't wait to see what everyone creates.  We will have limited supplies at the co-op for those who need to make one there!
